A Non-Traditional Guestbook

February 23, 2010

This is a series of posts currently being featured on the Real Weddings Magazine blog and was previously posted on February 20th.

Recessionista Bride Stevie wanted something special for her guests to sign as they arrived to her wedding extravaganza – and a simple guestbook wasn’t going to cut it! We poured over concepts until we came to the conclusion – the Guestbook Quilt was the ONLY way to go for Stevie!

When guests arrived, they were greeted with a guestbook attendant that explained the rules:
• Take a pre-cut pinking-sheared square,
• Use a fabric safe pen,
• Remember to write your sentiment in the center, and
• Pin it to the clothesline!

We set the table with a custom-designed Guestbook Quilt sign, filled a golden vase with gilded clothes pins and set a tray full of quilt squares topped with fabric pens.

The clothesline kept its shape, weighed-down by interspersed photos of the bride and groom. This kept the squares on display so that guests could view the couple’s photos while reading sentiments left by others throughout the evening. Stevie’s aunt would collect the squares after the wedding, as her gift, and create a custom heirloom wedding quilt that could be enjoyed for years to come!

If you are inspired to do a Guestbook Quilt and plan to sew the quilt yourself, the true price of the guestbook can be considered a deferred cost – you can budget for the remainder of the quilt after the expense of the wedding has passed. A quick tip:  keep the signing squares in a neutral color so that sentiments are easy to read and they can be paired with fabrics that match your home, not just your wedding palette.

Inspired to do a non-traditional guestbook? Here are a few ideas to get your brainstorming started:

For the Wine Lovers: Purchase a giant bottle of your favorite vino or champagne and have your guests sign directly onto the bottle using a glass pen in a pretty metallic color. Bonus: pop the cork on your anniversary to celebrate!

For the Music Lovers: Have your guests sign a guitar (acoustic or electric) using a Sharpie in your favored colors. The instrument can be mounted on the wall in your home to be enjoyed where you play or listen to music together.

For the Food Lovers: For a guestbook that can be displayed in the room where you spend the most time, your kitchen, purchase a large ceramic platter. Make sure to use a permanent ceramic paint pen, so the loving words aren’t washed away. Post-wedding, place your platter on an easel to proudly display it a la countertop.

For the Art Lovers: Turn your guestbook into a custom work of art by allowing guests to color in portions of a custom canvas. Create a faint grid using a pencil and surround the canvas with your choice of medium: markers, crayons, colored pencils. Make sure that the art won’t make a mess, as your guests will most likely be dressed in their best!

The options are endless!  Can you think of a non-traditional guestbook that reflects the hobbies of you and your fiancĂ©e’s unique hobbies?

Adding Bling to Your Invitation Suite

February 16, 2010

This is a series of posts currently being featured on the Real Weddings Magazine blog and was previously posted on February 13th.
Curry Yellow, Black, and White Vintage Flourish Invitation Suite with RSVP Postcard, Wrap-around label, Rhinestones and Custom Envelope Liner

There are many local invitation design companies that offer a semi-DIY option, such as custom-design invitations but you do all the printing and assembly work.

For our Recessionista Bride, Stevie, she wanted a unique design that really expressed her personality and the look for her wedding, but her budget wouldn’t allow a full complete design, assembly and mailing package. So to better fit her budget, we offered to let her do the printing and assembly herself while only charging her for the design work itself. Again, there are many local invitation companies that will do the same thing — you just have to call them and ask! Stevie enlisted the help of friends and family to add a few special finishing touches to her Invitation Suite – and you can easily do the same:

Custom Invitation Liners
We designed a custom pattern that Stevie printed, cut, and mounted into her Invitation Envelopes. As she had chosen to use Paper Source’s A6 Envelopes in Curry, she was able to use Paper Source’s Envelope Liner Template Kit to cut out exact matches for her set.

Monogram Ribbon Wraps
We designed sheets of Stevie & Blake’s Monogram and after Stevie printed the pages, we turned them into sticker paper using a Xyron. She then used a custom-punch to create monogram seals that secured Paper Source Curry ribbon around her Invitation cards.

Rhinestone Accents
This is where the real bling begins – we found bronze rhinestone stickers in three sizes to add a beautiful sparkle to her suite. Stevie placed each rhinestone over a portion of the Invitation flourish, creating a custom bedazzled look at DIY prices.

The options are endless – sewn fabric pockets, custom hang-tags and even loose lavender pieces are only some of the extra special touches some of our Recessionista Brides have used to embellish their invitations. All it takes is a little time and some extra elbow grease!

Did you DIY any portion of your wedding Invitation Suite design?

0 Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 2010

February 12, 2010

Pantone released their Fashion Color Report for Fall 2010 yesterday and my head is just spinning with ideas! I love that the chosen swatches work almost seamlessly with the previous season's palette, creating an easy transition from Spring to Summer to Fall. There are some beautiful colors in here, including the 2010-favored turquoise-inspired Lagoon (16-5418) and, of course, the neutral of now, Oyster Gray (14-1107).

See how beautifully these colors pair with the two lovely Spring tabletops below? Add just a few more rich undertones, like Golden Glow (15-1050), Lipstick Red (19-1764), Chocolate Truffle (19-1526), or Woodbine (18-0538) and you're Fall-bound in 2010!

5 A Tribute to McQueen: Wedding Shoe Love

February 11, 2010

When catching up with my Twitter friends this morning, I caught sight of some terrible news: fashion designer Alexander McQueen died of suicide at the age of 40.

This is particularly heartbreaking for many reasons - one of which is the fact that I wore McQueen on my wedding day. My reception/dancing shoes were a pair of much adored Alexander McQueen black and white striped satin slingbacks from a few seasons back. They were a little bit rockstar and a little bit black tie - absolutely perfect for me and I knew I would wear them again.

I'm sitting here at my office, in my black Cole Haan flat boots, wishing I had swapped them out for my wedding day shoes - sure, they're a bit formal for a business casual office and not exactly winter-friendly, but today I don't think it would've mattered.

Alexander McQueen is best known for his edgy chiffon skull scarves and his amazingly edgy runway collections worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, eclectic heiress Daphne Guinness and many other celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Olivia Wilde, Camilla Belle, Anna Paquin, Sandra Bullock, Beyonce, and Rihanna. If I could have worn his Oyster Dress as a wedding gown, I would have died and gone to heaven.

3 The Recessionista Bride:
Alter an Unexpected Dress

This is a series of posts currently being featured on the Real Weddings Magazine blog and was previously posted on February 5th.

Photo courtesy of Sarah Maren Photography
We all know about OnceWed, PreOwnedWeddingDresses and eBay as options to find a pre-worn designer wedding dress for rock-bottom prices, right?
If not, check these sites out and make the decision now: does it matter to you if the dress has been worn before? If it DOES matter to you, you still have options to find the dress that’s perfect for YOU!
Recessionista Bride Stevie was ready to think outside-the-box when she fell in love with a gorgeous wedding gown: the Pronovias Nerveo, a beautiful strapless lace trumpet gown with a frothy pleated top. But, it came with a price tag of $1,500, quite a bit more than what she had budgeted. In fact, our budget for the dress, veil and alterations was $1,000 – and while shopping at OnceWed might have been a solution, Stevie stood tall at 5’11” – much higher than most brides. Plainly put, we needed a sample or a new dress.

Pronovias Nerveo above, photo courtesy of Pricescope

Stevie hit gold when shopping at 2000 Dreams Bridal Shop (a bridal boutique with locations in San Diego and Temple, CA), she found a deeply discounted sample that fit the bill for all of her wishes – lace, trumpet shape, beautiful pleated hemline – expect for one small detail: it had a mock neck. However, it was perfectly in her price range: under $1,000 including both alterations (in-house) and a complimentary veil.

Photo above of the dress pre-alterations courtesy of PartyPop

Fortunately, the structure of the dress was not compromised by removing the mock neck and the alterations specialists were willing to do these major changes in the included alterations. Stevie had her dream dress for less than 2/3 of the original cost! This proves once again, that appearances can be deceiving – try to look beyond your first impression of a dress before making your final decision.

0 What Inspires Me

February 6, 2010

Fortune Cookie Favors by Beau-coup

Just about everything inspires me - from magazines to blogs, from packaging to inner mechanics, from books to...fortune cookie fortunes. Yes, fortune cookie fortunes are regularly saved and displayed on our refrigerator at home under the weight of many magnets.

Perhaps it's the affirmation-esque nature of the positive thoughts, but they have been eerily accurate for me over the past couple of years. Here's a choice selection of fortunes I've received recently:

I opened this cookie right before I started KME:

Try a new hat for a change in looks. Be creative!
After taking on my first event, in which I spent a lot of extra time on the details:

Your charitable efforts will be worthwhile.

Immediately following my third KME event:

You will obtain your goal if you maintain your course.

After my sixth event:

New financial resources will soon become available to you.

And finally, during the development of the Bodacious Business Planners:

Your surrounding friends will take good care of you.

That, they have! Aren't they eerily accurate? I keep these particular fortunes on my desk as regular inspiration to keep on keepin' on. After all, I will obtain my goal if I maintain my course, right?
